Ljubljana Vacation and Travel Tips

Ljubljana is tragically an often-overlooked European capital city. However, Slovenia’s capital city and capital of culture can rival any other on the continent, due to its beauty and grandeur. Despite its relatively small size, Ljubljana packs a big punch when it comes to parks, palaces, museums, castles, cafes and quality restaurants. In fact, Ljubljana is fast becoming one of Europe’s best culinary capitals.

Overview

The Ljubljanica River divides the old town from the city’s commercial district. This tranquil river is popular for leisurely boat cruises, which is a great way to see the city and its picturesque bridges, and is lined with outdoor cafes. Ljubljana is also one of Europe’s greenest capitals, and because of the city’s 50,000-plus students, one of its liveliest.

What To Do

Ljubljana Castle – Overlooking the city for the past 900 years, Ljubljana Castle is one of the most historically significant sites in the city. It can be reached on foot or by funicular. Once there, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Ljubljana, 2 restaurants, a Slovenian history museum and a puppet museum.

Triple Bridge – There are many bridges spanning the Ljubljanica River, but none as iconic as Jože Ple?nik’s iconic Triple Bridge. This UNESCO World Heritage Site connects Ljubljana’s old and new towns.

Tivoli Park – No visit to Ljubljana is complete without strolling through expansive Tivoli Park. The city’s largest and most beautiful park is home to tree-lined paths, fountains, a botanical garden, wooded areas, Tivoli mansion, the Museum of Modern Art and even a zoo.

When to Go

The best time to visit Ljubljana is in shoulder season, April to mid-June or September to November. Mid-June is also a great time to visit if you want to catch the renowned Ljubljana Jazz Festival, one of the world's leading jazz festivals.
