Overview

This snorkeling and diving mecca is located at the southern tip of the Placencia Peninsula. The amazing Belize Barrier Reef lies about seventeen miles off shore. Underwater worlds of coral and colorful schools of fish tempt divers and snorkelers from across the country and around the globe.

Sixteen miles of stunning white-sand beaches offer the perfect haven for sun-seekers, as lush Maya Mountains tower above. The calm emerald-colored lagoon provides a home for curious marine turtles, endangered manatees, playful dolphins and stingrays that use the lagoon as their nursery.

It is easy to arrange for a dive boat to the area or other splendid cayes dotting these sublime seas. The mini-atoll known as Laughing Bird Caye National Park, for instance, offers sugary white-sand beaches, plenty of inquisitive birds, including the brown pelican, green heron, and blackbird, and shady palm trees perfect for lazing about.

The myriad islands just off Placenia’s coast beckon vacationers and couples looking for a romantic hideaway.

What To Do

Take a two-hour drive to Belize’s capital city, Belmopan, and explore its colorful sites.

Kayak from one breathtaking isle to the next off the emerald green coast of Placencia.

Take a luxury catamaran ride for endless views of spectacular Caribbean seas.

From April through July, around the time of the full moon, swim with the gentle giants of the sea, Belize Whale Sharks.

Stroll amid the white picket fences, quaint shops, and mango and coconut trees of Placencia Peninsula Village.

See howler monkeys, iguanas, turtles and more on a Monkey River tour through mangrove trees to a native Creole village.

When to Go

Those looking for a sizzling good time will find it in Placencia during the warmer months of May through September, when temperatures run from 72 F to 88 F. Rainfall is highest between June and November. The cooler months from December through March range from 64 F to 84 F.

Although January through April is considered the dry season, southern Belize is known for both humidity and sun, so rain may fall all year round. Once you’re in the water, it won’t matter a bit. If you happen to visit during June, check out their fun-filled Placencia Lobsterfest.
